“Hey Miss Pa. Pa-tr-on, do you want to see my dinosaur? He’s really ugly and has big sharp teeth. Raaaawwwwww!” he playfully growled, holding up his T-Rex, trying his best to make Patron afraid. Him trying to pronounce her name sounded so cute.

“Aww hey, cutie. I see you have a scary dinosaur, please don’t let it bite me.” Running into my arms, she faked like she was afraid for her life. Josiah thought it was so funny, he fell on the floor laughing. Before today, she had never really interacted with small children, but somehow, she was doing a damn good job of it.

“Dinner is ready, everyone.” Mrs. Taylor smiled, wiping her hands on her flowered apron.

I loved her services because I had only hired her to watch after my son, but she went out of her way and did the whole works. She kept the place clean and tidy, cooked, and was even helping Josiah with his schoolwork. For the extended work she performed, I always paid her handsomely. I couldn’t help but laugh at Josiah because he was already sitting at his place at the table. He really loved Mrs. Taylor’s cooking, and I had to admit her food was fire. At this address, we were used to Haitian dishes, but she introduced us to the true definition of soul food.

“Smells good, I can’t wait to dig in.” She looped her arm within mine, and this moment felt so right. Pulling her chair out, I waited until she was seated before pushing her chair up to the table. Sitting at the head of the table, I picked up my fork and knife and was ready to dig in. Collard greens, candied yams, honey mustard ribs, yellow rice and buttermilk cornbread smelling gooder than a motha.

Pop! Mrs. Taylor had popped my hand like I was a disobedient child. Josiah had a surprised look on his face because he couldn’t believe I had been scolded. Chuckling to myself, I could see already she didn’t play. “Blade, I know this is your house, but we will say grace over our food before we eat. We show our father we are thankful because it’s people in the third world countries that are starving as I speak. We are so blessed here in America, so would you like to bless the food?” Dragging my hands down my face, I wasn’t prepared. The only time I had ever prayed was when my wife had died. I prayed she’d somehow come back to life, but she didn’t. That made me not really have faith in prayer after that.

“God is great, God is—" Placing her hands on top of mine, Mrs. Taylor gave me a stern look as in telling me I knew better. Josiah had both of his small hands covering his mouth, trying to hold in his fit of giggles. He literally thought the entire scenario was comical.

“So, you telling me you don’t have anything to be personally thankful for? I’d expect that kind of grace to be said from your five-year-old son.
